Gemini’s AI At The Paris Olympics

Google is the official AI sponsor for Team USA in the 2024 Olympicsbroadcast from Paris. A number of Gemini features like Google Maps Immersive Views, AI Overviews, and even Circle to Search will pop up on the Olympics feed from NBC. Is this just another AI fad, or a taste of the future of more immersive and personalized AI-sports coverage?

NBC Coverage

Comcast-owned NBC will use Gemini for things like Google Maps' 3D views of venues and AI-powered search overviews to answer questions about sports, eg the importance of lane assignments in swimming races. Comedian Leslie Jones will also use Google's AI tools to learn a new sport, and five Olympic athletes will appear in social videos and promos using AI tech. NBC will also run personalized AI-generated daily recaps of the competition that will be narrated by AI generated versions of famous sports commentators including Al Michaels.

AI in Sportscasting

Since 2023, Amazon Prime Video has been leveraging AI and ML tools to offer features for Thursday Night Football and Premier League soccer broadcasts like on-screen graphics with strategic insights. These overlays include player stats, predictions, and interactive elements that aim to enhance the viewer’s understanding and enjoyment of the game. ESPN is also using AI to generate real-time analyses and in game predictions. The AI copilots help human analysts and presenters to find and deliver insights.

Immersive Sportscasting

Another major trend will be VR and AR in sport. Apple just announced it will offer Vision Proimmersive video of behind-the-scenes footage of the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend and big-wave surfing. Fans could soon be able to use VR headsets to experience games from a player’s perspective or in a fully immersive environment. Apple plans to release more sports content over the year and Amazon is also streaming TNF games in HDR.

This is just the beginning. Pretty soon we can expect to see much more personalized content - e.g. curated content tracking of your favourite teams, and players into highlights reels or breakdowns. This should improve the user experience as well as boosting viewer and retention rates for networks.
